Quantum Entanglement & Teleporation

Early in the history of quantum mechanics, entanglement was blasted by Albert Einstein as spukhafte Fernwirkung or spooky action at a distance. How can we make sense of a concept that baffled one of the founders of modern physics? The difficulty in understanding quantum mechanics often comes from incorrectly assuming it works like our other laws of nature—giving us perfect predictions and a clear understanding of why things happen. At the root of this difference is the way measurements and results interact with one another.
In this talk, physicist Andrew Dawes
will describe the quantum mechanical principles behind recent experiments that demonstrate the strange and intriguing concepts of entanglement and teleportation. He will discuss implications of these observations as well as their prospects for use in advanced technologies.
Andrew M.C. Dawes, Ph.D. is an physicist specializing in photonics and quantum optics. He completed his graduate studies at Duke University and currently teaches Physics at Pacific University, along with a variety of undergraduate courses. Professor Dawes also leads a research group that is developing techniques for measuring the quantum states of light.
