Bats: Breaking All the Rules
with Dr. Jan Just, research associate at Portland State University and an instructor of Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Biology at Portland Community College

Bats break all the rules. They aren't like other mammals. They are economically and environmentally important. Due to their complex natural history, they can also be a challenge to survey and manage. In this talk, Dr. Just will explain why bats are breaking the rules, how researchers identify bat species, and ways in which sampling design influences what we know about bat presence in Oregon and Washington.

Jan Just, PhD, received her undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado in 1991 and earned a PhD at Portland State University in 1999. Her dissertation work was the study of the mating system of the Straw Colored Fruit Bat. She is a research associate at Portland State University and an instructor of Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Biology at Portland Community College. Outside of work, Jan has two daughters, 12 pets, and enjoys back-country skiing, dual-sport motorcycles, white water rafting, and writing.
