With Brian McLean, Director of Rapid Prototype at LAIKA
Stop motion is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Join us for a look inside the science of LAIKA’s newest stop-animation feature, The Boxtrolls
, as Brian McLean takes you through the processes and discusses his work using 3D printer technology.
Brian’s diverse background includes an Annie Award for Special Achievement in Animation for his work on Coraline
, and following the release of ParaNorman
, he was named by Variety as one of 2012's "Animation Elite." Prior to coming to LAIKA Brian worked as a traditionally trained sculptor creating large scale characters for Warner Bros. and Disney. He also hand-built toy prototypes and numerous scale models for TV and print ads while working at M5 Industries, best known for the TV show MythBusters.About LAIKA:

, based on Alan Snow’s bestselling novel Here Be Monsters
. Introducing audiences to a new breed of family – The Boxtrolls
, a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright) in the amazing cavernous home they’ve built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When the town’s villain, Archibald Snatcher (Academy Award® winner Ben Kingsley), comes up with a plot to get rid of the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he meets and teams up with fabulously feisty Winnie (Elle Fanning). Together, these soft-boiled detectives uncover the hidden connections in Eggs’ past and devise a daring plan to save his unique family.
