Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Just what is Science Pub?

A: Science Pub is an informal science lecture with beer, wine, or a non-alcoholic beverage. Basically you get a chance to eat and drink while learning about science. The presentations in Portland and Eugene start at 7:00 p.m. with 10 trivia questions on the night's topic (with prizes!). After trivia, the scientist takes over and usually speaks for an hour or so. Then it's time for Q&A with mics in the audience so everyone can hear. Things usually finish up no later than 9:00 p.m. Science Pub Corvallis follows roughly the same format, but the presentation starts at 6:00 p.m. and ends at 8:00 p.m.

Q: What time should I arrive?

A: All six locations for Science Pubs are pretty popular, so show up early if you want to have time to order food and drinks and to get a good seat. No guarantees, but at least 30 minutes early is a good time to aim for. Keep in mind, however, that at the two Portland venues, there are often people waiting in line when the doors open at 5:00 p.m.

Q: How much does it cost? Do I have to make a reservation or buy a ticket?

A: Science Pub is officially free in all locations and no RSVP is required. However, there is a $5.00 suggested donation per person at the two Portland venues, Hillsboro, and Eugene. The $5.00 is not required if that's financially difficult for you, and more than $5.00 is always welcome. All proceeds go directly to support Science Pub. Pub-goers are responsible for purchasing their own food and beverages.

There are occasional special Science Pub events where tickets are required, but ticket prices and purchase locations will be included in the notices and on the OMSI website.

Q: Do I need to be a scientist to attend?

A: Nope. Science Pub is designed to be enjoyable for those completely unfamiliar with science, self-identified "science geeks," and everyone in between. There's also generally plenty of time during the Q&A for you to ask basic or detailed questions as you like.

Q: Are kids allowed?

A: All Science Pub venues are open to all ages however, these talks are aimed at adult audiences both in level of conversation and in subject matter. If you're thinking of bringing your child, please consider their age and maturity level, and whether they may distract other members of the audience. When in doubt, please leave your child at home (with a sitter, of course!)

Q: I'd really like to hear someone speak about (insert science topic here). How do I get that topic on the schedule?

A: If you have suggestions for subjects or speakers, please send us an e-mail!

Q: I missed the talk on (insert topic here). Did you record it, or will you repeat it?

A: Unfortunately, the presentations are not recorded. Some talks are repeated in other venues. If you want to know more about if/when a talk will be repeated, or you would like to suggest that we do an encore performance of a talk, send us an e-mail.

Q: Science Pub is awesome! How do I help out?

A: We're always looking for reliable people to help out with different aspects of actually running the Science Pub, including things like passing and gathering evaluations, holding the mics during Q&A, and setting up the lighting and sound equipment. If you're interested in helping at an event, please send us an e-mail.

We're also always looking for ways to spread the word about Science Pub, so please feel free to re-post or tweet about upcoming Science Pub topics.

Q: If I come to Science Pub, will I have a great time learning about science while enjoying a delicious beer in the company of lots of other people who like science?

A: Yes!
