The fictional Sherlock Holmes (and the very real Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) were greatly indicative of the 19th century, a time of advancement in the sciences and medical research. Charles Darwin published The Origin of the Species, Louis Pasteur made his first vaccine for rabies and Thomas Edison created the lightbulb. For more information on Conan Doyle and what influenced him to create the Sherlock Holmes character, visit the official website
for the exhibit.
