As the toy car whooshes past at lightning speed, you realize that it’s hovering inches above the ground. The fan begins to spin and it moves faster than you thought possible! Is it magic? Is it using the force? No, it’s science!
This is just one of the fantastic demonstrations created by this year’s Rising Stars program, OMSI’s volunteer program for high school students. This summer we welcomed two more sessions of Rising Stars into our museum. The Rising Stars program provides a chance for 60 high school students to volunteer within OMSI and gain valuable hands-on experience interacting with guests on the museum floor. At the end of each session, the Rising Stars have each spent 90 hours volunteering at the museum. This summer our Rising Stars have volunteered over 5,000 hours!
In addition to learning new and exciting things about science, the Rising Stars also research and create their own personal science demonstrations that they perform on the floor at the museum. Each session culminates with a demo fair, during which all 30 session participants set up their personal demos and present them for the public. Even though the first session demo fair was back in July, you can still attend the second session demo fair on August 29th, from 11:30am to 1:00pm in the Featured Hallway.
If you or someone you know is interested in applying for the program for the summer of 2013, we begin taking applications in the winter. For more information about Rising Stars and youth volunteering opportunities, please see www.omsi.edu/youthvolunteers
