Antarctica: On The Edge
Antarctica lives in our dreams as the most remote, most forbidding continent on Earth. Yet it is also a fragile place, home to an incredible variety of marine life along its edges: several species of penguins, tens of thousands of seals, humpback, Minke and killer whales, and dozens of different seabirds including giant, soaring albatrosses. It is arguably the most stunning, the most breathtaking place on the planet. Because of all the ice that covers and surrounds it, Antarctica changes every season, every day, every hour; its beauty is never the same twice.
But the nine-hundred-mile long Peninsula that juts out from the continent like a long finger is changing faster than anywhere on the planet, thanks to both warming air and sea temperatures.
Traveling to Antarctica from the tip of South America by sailboat and then along the Peninsula by sea kayak, foot, small plane and dive gear, we will take a look at this one-of-a-kind place and bring back a unique perspective on our planet’s most remote region and the incredible wildlife that call it home.

Journey To Space
A celebration of space exploration, Journey to Space is a tribute to international cooperation in space research and a vision toward our near-term future beyond Earth’s orbit – a manned mission to Mars within a generation. Beautifully and inspiringly chronicling our history in space – including the shuttle program, MIR, the International Space Station and the Hubble telescope – Journey to Space recognizes these milestones in the context of our future in the cosmos, what we’ve learned, and how to apply this knowledge to deep space missions. The film takes audiences on a behind-the-scenes tour of the international effort to send astronauts to Mars within the next 20 years, culminating in a virtual voyage to the Red Planet. Dazzling and meticulous computer imagery depicts the new machines that will soon enter into our lexicon – Orion, Olympus, SLS rockets – spacecraft, habitats, landers, and vehicles necessary to achieve interplanetary travel, touchdown and colonization.
Journey to Space taps into the same human fervor and fascination that makes science fiction so popular, our unquenchable drive to explore and discover what lies beyond. This film, though, is not fiction. Mars is the next step in what will be an unending human odyssey to explore the cosmos. Journey to Space is about the next chapter, a vision certain to inspire today’s young explorers and dreamers. It is time to take the next great leap into space. It is time for our species, in the words of Carl Sagan, to “set sail across the cosmic ocean.” Next stop… Mars!

Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto: Advances in Minimally Invasive Cancer Surgery
With Dr. William Winter, MD, Gynecologic Oncologist at Legacy Medical Group
Doors Open @ 5PM | $5 Suggested Donation
It was not that long ago that radical cancer surgery meant days, if not weeks, of hospital recovery. Add to that weeks to months of at-home recovery, and the time lost from home, social and work activities was staggering. Additional cancer treatments had to be delayed sometimes to the point of being “too little too late.” Conventional laparoscopy was not felt to have a role in treatment of the cancer patient and radical surgery. In the late 1990s all of that changed.
In this talk, gynecologic oncologist Dr. Will Winter will describe the advancement of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) with robotics. From the perspective of a resident trained in open surgery, a fellow trained in conventional MIS, to his adoption of robotic technology in his practice, Dr. Winter will share his experience with the transition of surgical techniques over the last few decades. He will discuss both the pros and cons of these new technologies and future developments.
William E. Winter, III, M.D. is a board-certified gynecologic oncologist, specializing in the surgical and medical care of women with gynecologic cancers – ovarian, uterine, and cervical, amongst others. He completed medical school at University of Virginia. He traveled to the West Coast to do his residency training in OB/GYN at the Oregon Health and Science University. He completed his fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center/National Cancer Institute in Washington, D.C. After a four year stent as an attending surgeon in the U.S. Air Force in San Antonio teaching residents, he returned to Portland to join his former mentors and is now part of the Legacy Medical Group/Knight Cancer Collaborative. He continues to teach both OB/GYN residents and MIS fellows with special interests in robotic surgery, ovarian cancer, and clinical research. He has been voted a Portland Monthly Top Doctor the last eight years running. He is married to an Internist, who is much smarter than he is, and has two charming daughters. In his spare time, Dr. Winter also plays lead guitar for a band of gynecologic oncologists, N.E.D., playing across the country to raise awareness for women’s cancers.
