The Science of Water and Fountains
Properties of Water
There are several properties that make water important to life on our planet, as well as important to operating a fountain.
Gravity
Understanding the force of gravity is important in understanding how fountains work.
Pressure
Fountains use pressure to push or pull water against the pull of gravity.
Hero's Fountain
This example applies the principles of both gravity and pressure.
Pumps in the Real World
Human Heart
Pumps show up in other places besides fountains. One familiar pump is the human heart.
Automobile Fuel Pump
Another common pump is an automobile fuel pump, which allows gasoline to pass from the tank to the carburetor.
