Forest Cycles
Stage Seven: Big, Shade-Tolerant Conifers

Time: 250 to 750 years
Sun-loving Douglas-fir cannot sprout and grow in the deep shade of the old forest. Because of this limitation, the Douglas-fir trees are replaced by western hemlock and western red cedar. There are many standing, dead trees, called snags. The forest floor is covered with fallen and rotting trees. Young hemlocks take root on the top of the decaying logs.

Young shade-tolerant trees will continue to grow where old trees have fallen until the next fire or other major disturbance.

Common Plants:
Western Hemlock
Western Red Cedar
Douglas-Fir
Big Leaf Maple
