OMSI's Experiencing Chemistry Teacher Resource Guide
OMSI's Experiencing Chemistry Teacher Resource Guide is a wonderful resource for K-8 teachers, homeschoolers, childcare programs, and groups who want to explore chemistry without expensive lab equipment. The Teacher Resource Guide (or TRG) provides K-8 teachers with hands-on activities, explanations, and cross-curricular activities. These are designed to accompany and enhance the seven thematic units offered in OMSI's chemistry lab. Classroom teachers were involved in the development, design, and classroom testing of every activity in this popular resource guide, currently in use in multiple states and in several international locations. The TRG contains seven units full of hands-on activities, explanations, and ideas for exploration. The hands-on classroom activities illustrate chemistry concepts in a very approachable way. Detailed guidelines for both teachers and students make these activities easy, fun, and safe to do with limited space, time, and budget. The activities use common materials available in your kitchen or at a local supermarket or hardware store. In addition to activities, the TRG includes guidelines for using OMSI's Chemistry Lab, and over a dozen 8.5"x11" color reproductions of OMSI Chemistry Lab posters. OMSI's weekly lab activities are described in detail, as are key concepts for classroom review. For curriculum planning, all activities have notes about Science Process Skills, Science Concepts, and Oregon State Science Benchmarks (which are closely aligned to National Science Standards). OMSI's Experiencing Chemistry Museum Manual
The Museum Manual provides comprehensive in-depth information and procedures needed to reproduce all of OMSI's chemistry lab activities. In addition to detailed guides to each activity the manual includes information on how to set up a lab. Information is provided on the physical layout of the lab, equipment needed to stock the lab, chemical storage and hygiene, standard operating procedures, staff training, working with school groups, and working with volunteers and high school interns. There are also several appendices that serve as useful references. This manual provides complete information for science centers wishing to set up a chemistry lab and is a useful resource for middle school and high school teachers.
