All Washed Up

When it come to busting up grease and dirt, few things work better than soap, thanks to the amazing structure of soap molecules! These molecules work by having two very different sides. One side is an oxygen (O) ion loosely hanging on to a sodium (Na) or potassium (K) ion. An ion is an electrically charged atom or group of atoms. Because this end is very similar to water molecules (H2O) it can mix well with water. The other end is a long chain of carbon and hydrocarbon (H) atoms linked together.

Rising Stars Demo Fair

This summer we welcomed two more sessions of Rising Stars to OMSI. The Rising Stars program provides a chance for 60 high school students to volunteer and gain valuable hands-on experience interacting with guests on the museum floor. At the end of each session, the Rising Stars have each spent 90 hours volunteering at the museum.

As part of their program OMSI Rising Stars will research and create their own personal science demonstrations. Each session culminates with a demo fair where the 30 session participants present their demos to the public.

Get Ready for School: Child Development and Self-Regulation
with Megan McClelland, associate professor, Hallie E. Ford Center for Healthy Children and Families at Oregon State University

If you want to know if your kindergartener will succeed in school, look to Simon Says for an answer. Or to Red Light/Green Light. Or to the marshmallow game. These activities give children an opportunity to demonstrate self-regulation, the ability to control their behavior, thoughts and emotions.

Why I am a Maker

Last year I jumped at the chance to have a booth at the first ever Portland Mini Maker Faire at OMSI. Having just published a book earlier in the spring I knew the faire would be a great opportunity to demonstrate some of the crazy projects I’d come up with and sell the book itself. This was the first time I’d done a festival so I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. OMSI held a couple planning meetings for us which really helped me wrap my head around the prep work.
