Ever since we announced the Portland Mini Maker Faire, the two responses I most often get are "YES, finally!" and "What the heck IS a Maker Faire?" Folks who have been to a Maker Faire in the past or even just heard reports know Portland is a great town to host one, and sure enough nearly all the makers we're showcasing this weekend are from the Pacific Northwest. But those who haven't heard of Maker Faire may need a little background.

Core77's Hand-Eye Supply store is proud to be a part of Portland's emerging maker culture and we couldn't be more thrilled about the upcoming Mini Maker Faire at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. As media sponsors for Portland's Mini Maker Faire and the upcoming World Maker Faire in New York City, we are enthusiastic supporters of the World's Biggest Show and Tell.

Similar to the medieval markets of a well fortified village, craftsmen, artists, builders and people who know the business end of a trebuchet are getting together in just a few weeks to show off their mad skills. Unlike the good old pre-industrial age, though, this faire has a decidedly tech inclination, with robot builders, Arduino programmers, 3D printers and a whole mess of folks who do cool things with LEGO bricks demonstrating what their eclectic organizations and businesses are up to.

On Saturday, August 5, OMSI will present a full day-into-night festival of all things celestial, with opportunities for starry-eyed guests to learn little-known facts about the universe, constellations, stars and planets. Representatives from local clubs and organizations will be on hand to answer questions, lead hands-on activities, and discuss space science until 4:00 p.m. Guests can also get a look at an inflatable life-sized model of the NASA Mars Rover, Curiosity.
“The Universe is trying to kill you. It’s nothing personal. It’s trying to kill everybody.” So begins the book Death From the Skies!, the subject of a very special Science Pub being held at the Bagdad Theater on Wednesday, August 1, featuring Dr. Phil Plait, a.k.a. the “Bad Astronomer”. Plait is well known for his books, his blog, and his TV show Bad Universe that was featured on the Discovery Channel. He is also an enthusiastic supporter of making science education fun, which is what OMSI and Science Pub is all about!
