RISING STARS
OMSI'S YOUTH VOLUNTEER TRAINING PROGRAM
Are you looking for a fun and exciting volunteer experience where you can learn new skills, make new friends, and go behind the scenes of a world-class museum? Then OMSI's youth volunteer training program, Rising Stars, is for you!
The Rising Stars program is offered during the school year and during the summer for youth ages 14 to 18. You'll learn about public speaking, teaching and customer service, present interactive science demonstrations for OMSI visitors, and develop your own original science demonstration. You'll also gain valuable work experience to build your resumé, and have the opportunity to meet school community service requirements while learning more about science. After you finish the Rising Stars program, you may have the opportunity to stay on at OMSI as a regular volunteer!
School Year Rising Stars Program
The Fall 2008 Rising Stars program is full and in progress. Please submit applications for the Spring 2009 program! Selection will begin in January 2009.
There are two sessions of the school year Rising Stars program, one in the fall (mid-October through mid-December) and one in the spring (mid-February through mid-April). Each session is a ten-week service-learning program that combines training and hands-on volunteer experience. You’ll volunteer once a week for four to five hours. During this time, you will learn public speaking, customer service, and other job skills, and then put your new knowledge to work by presenting interactive science demonstrations to OMSI visitors and developing your own original science demonstration! You will earn up to 50 hours of volunteer service and may have the opportunity to continue volunteering after the program ends.
The school year Rising Stars program is offered on Sundays or Wednesdays. Sunday participants can choose from one of two shifts: 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., or 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Students attending alternative schools or being home schooled can participate on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Summer Rising Stars Program
Selection for Summer 2009 will begin in April. Priority will be given to early applicants.
There are two sessions of OMSI's summer Rising Stars program, mid-June through July and mid-July through August. Each session is a six-week, service-learning program that combines training and hands-on volunteer experience. You’ll volunteer for three five-hour shifts per week. During this time, you will learn public speaking, customer service, and other job skills, and then put your new knowledge to work by presenting interactive science demonstrations to OMSI visitors and developing your own original science demonstration! You will earn up to 90 hours of volunteer service, and may have the opportunity to continue volunteering after the program ends.
Summer Rising Stars has a program fee of $250; need-based scholarships are available.
