Get hands-on at OMSI and reserve a seat in one of our interactive labs. Participants work directly with OMSI educators in small, group settings to get an in-depth look at cool, fun science topics.

 

Cost: $8 per ticket
Each lab is approximately 50 minutes.

Introduction to LEGO® Robots


 

What makes a robot a robot and what can they do and not do? Participants get hands-on experience as they program a LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot to navigate using its sensors. One robot per ticket, maximum two people per robot.

Advanced Programming LEGO® Robots

 

For participants who have already taken Introduction to LEGO Robots. Participants build on their learning by programming their robot to accomplish a series of tasks in the Tech Lab obstacle course. One robot per ticket, maximum two people per robot.

All Advanced Programming LEGO Robots labs are at 11:00 a.m. in the Technology Lab.

Squid Dissection

 

Participants will look for clues in the squid anatomy to figure out how these animals live. One squid per ticket, maximum two people per squid.

All Squid Dissection labs are at 10:00 a.m. in the Life Science Lab.

Cow Eye Dissection

 

Participants are led through the anatomy of the cow eye while finding out how this sensory organ allows us to see. This class is a follow-up to Squid Dissection. It is recommended that participants take the Squid Dissection Lab prior to Cow Eye Dissection. One cow eye per ticket, maximum two people per cow eye.

All Cow Eye Dissection labs are at 10:00 a.m. in the Life Science Lab.

Circus of Science 

 

The private version of OMSI's popular stage show, this lab has it all. Solutions that foam, change color, or instantly freeze. Colored fire, disappearing water, and expanding fog. You will learn amazing chemistry facts while watching our scientists demonstrate their favorite phenomena, and doing your own! One ticket per person.

All Circus of Science labs are at 5:30 p.m. in the Chemistry Lab.

Ride the Segway 

 

The Segway is a two-wheeled electric scooter with motion sensors that keeps you upright as you glide around the room. Students learn how the Segway works and discuss the choices involved in the technology we use in everyday life, all while taking turns riding OMSI's Segway!
Note: There is no minimum age limit other than the children must be able to stand on their own. The Segway has a maximum weight limit of 250 lbs. One ticket per person.

Microscopy for Beginners  

 

This lab is perfect for those interested in getting started in microscopy. Participants will get hands-on experience in the basics of using a compound light microscope. You will walk away with some simple steps to get you started making temporary slides of your own. One microscope per ticket, maximum two people per microscope.

Microscopy for Intermediates 

 

This is a continuation of OMSI's Beginner Microscope lab. We use simple household items to practice more advanced techniques of slide preparation. Participants will walk away with more in their bag of tricks to explore the minute world. One microscope per ticket, maximum two people per microscope.

Physics Phenomena 

 

View spectacular demonstrations of unusual physics, including the vacuum chamber, the Van de Graaf generator, or unusual musical instruments.

Bugs and Butterflies 

 

Who are the scientists that study insects, and how do they do it? What are some of the unique features of insects? In this basic introduction to insects, their bodies, and scientific investigation, students will meet live insects and explore the answers to these questions. Students will create and build an original insect to take home with them!

This lab is recommended for children ages 3-6. Parent/guardian participation and attendance is required.

Be a Naturalist!

 

What does a naturalist do? What does an owl eat? Students discover answers to these questions and more as they practice basic science skills including observing and drawing, taking weights and measurements, and investigating specimens from the natural world. An owl pellet dissection included; students take home their owl pellet artifacts.

This lab is recommended for children ages 3-6. Parent/guardian participation and attendance is required.

My Five Senses

 

Explore an assortment of materials designed to stimulate all five senses! Students have fun working with open-ended materials, while adults explore the importance of sensory-oriented play in early development. Lab includes take-home samples and recipe sheet for extended exploration.

This lab is recommended for children ages 3-6. Parent/guardian participation and attendance is required.

Fabulous Fossils 

 

Handle an assortment of rocks and fossils to figure out how to identify and define fossils. Participants help clean a real 65-million-year-old Triceratops and other fossils using professional tools and techniques. Each participant also makes a copy of a Velociraptor claw to take home. One ticket per person.

Frequently Asked Questions 

 

What is the cost?

Each lab is $8 per ticket.
It is one ticket per squid, robot, cow eye, or microscope with a maximum of two people (e.g. siblings, parent/child, etc.). Circus of Science, Physics Phenomena, Fabulous Fossils, and Ride the Segway are one ticket per person. Bugs and Butterflies, Be a Naturalist, and My Five Senses are one ticket per child, but parent/guardian attendance and participation is required.

 

 

Is there an age recommendation?

Labs are recommended for ages 8 and older. Young scientists need to be accompanied by an adult.

Bugs and Butterflies, Be a Naturalist, and My Five Senses are for ages 3-6.

 

 

I bought a ticket for my two children to share a robot,

can I stay and watch the lab?

You are welcome to observe the lab, but please keep in mind there is limited seating in the labs and ticket holders have priority.

 

 

How can I buy tickets?

Tickets may be purchased online or at the OMSI ticket desk. Due to high demand, it is recommended that you purchase your tickets online.

 

 

Can I return my tickets if I am not able to use them?

Tickets can only be returned in person at the OMSI ticket desk. Bring in your ticket and you will receive a full refund. The space will then be made available for another participant.

 

 

Does my ticket include admission to museum exhibits?

No, your ticket is for the lab only and does not include admission to the museum.

 

 

Where should I go when I arrive at OMSI?

Locations are listed with the dates and times above. Robots and Segway are in the technology lab on the first floor in the turbine hall. Squid and Cow Eye Dissection and Microscopy are in the life science lab on the second floor in the earth science hall. Circus of Science is in the chemistry lab on the first floor in the turbine hall. Fabulous Fossils is in the paleontology lab on the second floor in the earth science hall. Physics Phenomena is in the physics lab on the first floor in the turbine hall. Bugs and Butterflies, Be a Naturalist, and My Five Senses is in the discovery lab in science playground on the second floor.
