Celebrate Sustainably

Discover ways that you can make your celebrations more sustainable with homemade gifts, ornaments, wrapping paper, and healthy treats! Join OMS and local community partners as we explore ways to help you have a smaller environmental footprint during the holiday season. We are excited to have such a diverse collection of activities happening during the day as well as some fun stage demos.

E-cycling with EcoBinary: This event will feature a free electronic recycling station! Items that will be accepted include old holiday lights and home computer equipment such as CPU's, monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, terminals, modems, cables, software, and ink printer cartridges. Cell phones and their accessories will also be accepted.

Holiday Wreaths
: Create a wreath using natural materials from your own backyard.

Sewing 101: Try your hand at sewing with simple projects using repurposed fabric. Learn how to use a sewing machine and select the right needle and thread.

Card Creation: Create your own greeting cards using homemade stamps, stencils, and a fun paper folding technique.

Owl Ornaments: Put your toilet paper rolls to good use by making a cute owl ornament!

Pennants Garlands: Root for your home team and make a pennant garland from recycled materials donated by SCRAP.

Perfect Pie Crust: Learn tips and tricks about how to make the perfect pie crust and taste the difference between crusts made with butter vs. shortening.

Knitting Basics and Beyond: Make your own knitting needles and learn how to cast-on, purl, knit, slip stitch and more.

Holiday Table Décor: Dress up your table and dinner ware with what you already have at home, with Organ-ize.

Fabric Gift Wrap: Lulu Wraps will teach you creative ways to use fabric to wrap gifts.

Books, Books, Books: Sign up for a Multnomah County Library card and check out a how-to book on-site to get you ready for the holiday gift giving season.

Oregon Ballet Theater: Give the gift of dance with tickets to an upcoming performance by Oregon Ballet Theater. They will perform select scenes from the popular holiday show, The Nutcracker.

Recycled Fashion: Turn old magazines into beaded bracelets, recycle your old t-shirts into fashionable scarves, and use old puzzles with missing pieces to make fun, new earrings.

Mason Jar Goodies: Want to give someone cookies as a gift, but let them bake them when their ready? Decorate a jar and take home some fun recipes to go inside.
