OMSI's website at www.omsi.edu has been online since January, 1995. OMSI would like to thank all the dedicated staff and volunteers and the generous supporters who have contributed to making this website a great educational tool and information resource.
OMSI's website is designed to work on most browsers currently in common use, including Internet Explorer version 5 or greater, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape 7 or greater, and Safari*. We try to test our website on different browsers and operating systems, and hope that you will find our website accessible. If you experience any problems or errors on our website, please take a moment to let us know. We are grateful for any feedback and appreciate comments and suggestions from our visitors.
(*Please note that the OMSI website will not work on some older web browsers, including Netscape 6 and earlier, and Internet Explorer 4 or earlier.)
OMSI's website includes a number of interactive games, digital video clips, and other features that require free and commonly-installed web browser plugins (for example: Macromedia's Flash plugin, Apple's QuickTime player, or Microsoft's Windows Media player). In addition, there are a number of printable forms and documents posted to the website in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format. Where plugins are required in order to access a feature on the website, we try to indicate this on the webpage and provide a link where you can download the required software, if needed.
OMSI's website runs on Microsoft's Windows 2000 Server and Microsoft Internet Information Server. Notice the ".cfm" ending on all the OMSI webpages? OMSI uses Macromedia's Cold Fusion MX Server to serve dynamically-generated webpages. A webpage with a ".cfm" ending is a normal HTML webpage that also contains Cold Fusion code to enable a variety of advanced website features. OMSI analyzes its webserver traffic using WebTrends Reporting Center.
The drop down menus used to navigate OMSI's website were developed using the Ultimate Drop Down Menu Dynamic HTML (DHTML) menuing system. OMSI's website search functionality is powered by Google, through Google's Public Service Search program. The OMSI web team thanks these generous companies for making their technology available free of charge to non-profit organizations such as OMSI.
OMSI's web team uses a variety of software tools to develop materials for the OMSI website, including Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004 and Flash MX, and Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, among others.
OMSI currently has one person dedicated to working on its website, Michael Ring. Previous web designers include Casey Spain, Scott Weinrobe, Mark Chen, Nate Angell, Sam Siciliano, Ross Olson, Rob Vincent, Aaron Munter, Brad Branham, and others.
