|Description: Can you make lightning? Visitors move a rod through past two wire loops to produce a lightning like spark. When they do so, they are completing the circuit for a high voltage transformer, causing electricity to pass through the air between the rod and the loops. As electrons are transferred from one nitrogen molecule (the chief gas in air) to another, the nitrogen gives off blue light. This exhibit demonstrates how electrical energy is converted into light.|
