CSI Lecture Series

In celebration of the exhibit, CSI: The Experience, OMSI presents a lecture series about the science of investigation with local, real-world people who work on crime scenes every day. Lectures will be held in the OMSI cafe at 7:00 p.m. Food and beverage will be available for purchase. $2 suggested cover charge.

Five to six members of the Oregon State Police Forensic Lab will be on hand in CSI: The Experience during OMSI After Dark. There is no additional cover charge for this event; admission to OMSI After Dark is $10 for nonmembers / FREE for members.


Reserve a seat in a private lab at OMSI!

Get hands-on at OMSI and reserve a seat in one of three private interactive labs available this summer. Participants will work directly with OMSI educators in small, group settings to get an in-depth look at cool, fun science topics.

Squid Dissection, July 11, 11:00 a.m. in the Life Science Lab

Exploring the Universe, July 18, 11:00 a.m. in the Technology Lab
Participants begin to grasp the size and scale of the universe as they travel from the Earth to the stars using interactive demonstrations and computer simulations. Buy Tickets >

Introduction to Lego® Robots, August 1, 11:00 a.m. in the Technology Lab
What makes a robot a robot and what can they do and not do? Participants get hands-on experience as they program a LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot to navigate using its sensors.

Teen Science Night

A special free evening at OMSI just for visitors ages 13-18. Teens can explore the museum, rock out to a live DJ, ride the Segway, play games, and more! Teen Science Night is a quarterly event on Saturdays from 7:00-10:00 p.m. Admission is free; food and beverages are available for purchase.

Beyond Fact: Making Science Accessible

February—May 2010

Beyond Fact, a partnership between OMSI and Multnomah County Library, is a new initiative consisting of book discussions, lectures and a community reading project designed to inform, engage and enlighten participants on issues of current importance in the sciences.

OMSI Star Parties 2009

OMSI, Rose City Astronomers, Vancouver Sidewalk Astronomers and Oregon Parks and Recreation invite you to our free Star Parties. The Star Parties provide a great opportunity to meet other people that share your interest in astronomy, and to view the planets, moon, stars, and other celestial sights through telescopes and binoculars of all sizes. From beginners to experts, all ages are invited. This year all viewing will be held at both Rooster Rock State Park and Stub Stewart State Park on the same night!

Space Day Celebration

July 20

Visitors will be moon struck at Space Day, July 20, as they learn about the latest from NASA’s International Space Station, meteorites, actual moon rocks, and the latest NASA/JPL programs. Space Day is a world-wide event designed to promote the International Space Station and the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission.


Science On a Sphere opens in the Earth Science Hall

Opens July 24

OMSI has partnered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Service to bring an exciting new permanent exhibit to the Earth Science Hall called Science On a Sphere. Science On a Sphere is a six foot suspended sphere that uses computers and video projectors to display dynamic animated images of the Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, animal migration patterns, global warming trends, hurricane paths, as well as the surface of the sun, Mars, moon and more. In addition to a variety of pre-programmed content, Science On a Sphere will feature live demonstrations and other special programming options. Science On a Sphere will make it’s debut in the Earth Science Hall July 24. More info >

NASA Lecture by Andrew Chaikin, author of A Man on the Moon

July 28, 7:30 p.m. in the OMNIMAX Theater

Andrew Chaikin, author of A Man on the Moon, the book that inspired the popular mini-series, From the Earth to the Moon, visits OMSI to discuss NASA’s Apollo program and what’s ahead for the space program, including the upcoming LCROSS lunar-impact mission, which will impact in the moon’s permanently shadowed regions.
