Technology + Design = Big Plans!
What business does a science museum have talking about design, you ask? Quite a bit! We're looking ahead and thinking about the important world of design and its giant impact on how we think and act.

How? We're revamping Turbine Hall, starting with the addition of a Design Lab, a flexible, creative space that can accommodate a range of activities and groups, partnerships, residencies, classes, and demonstrations, making and testing designs, and sharing results.

Goals and impacts for the project include:

  • Increase student interest in science, engineering, and design subjects at a critical transition points between academic levels;
  • Inspire students to pursue science-based career options and personal interests related to Oregon job sectors;
  • Increase participant understanding of communication and independent and collaborative problem-solving skills for academic and career preparedness;
  • Increase visitor knowledge of Oregon’s innovation ecosystem, which includes design, technology, and advanced manufacturing sectors;
  • Connect visitors to partners providing local workshops, classes, and co-ops, where they can continue their learning in greater depth.

Visitors to the Design Lab will be empowered to question how things work in the world and feel inspired to explore solutions to challenges. Programming will encompass circuitry, materials, mechanical literacy and engineering, design, computer programming, and more.

Science on the Shores of Newport
As if the Oregon Coast wasn't fabulous enough, we're building a year-round, 20-acre science camp. And yes, you're invited!

We've broken ground at the Coastal Discovery Center at Camp Gray, and are on-track to open our doors to the first of 100,000 students this spring. Read more about the Coastal Discover Center's impact and goals.

Ways to Help

Children’s Scholarships

Help create $100,000 in scholarship support for local students, families and school groups. Every gift from $5-$5000 will be matched by The Oregon Community Foundation up to $50,000.

Wish Upon a Bunk

As the fire burns low, whispers and stifled laughter trickle between bunks as campers relive the day and look forward to tomorrow’s adventures in learning. Bring the excitement of exploration, friendship, and learning to Oregon’s students with a bunk naming gift of $1,000 and a wish. Each wish will be placed on a bunk for campers to read, to be inspired, and to dream.
