Journey To Space | 3D
A celebration of space exploration, Journey to Space is a tribute to international cooperation in space research and a vision toward our near-term future beyond Earth’s orbit – a manned mission to Mars within a generation. Beautifully and inspiringly chronicling our history in space – including the shuttle program, MIR, the International Space Station and the Hubble telescope – Journey to Space recognizes these milestones in the context of our future in the cosmos, what we’ve learned, and how to apply this knowledge to deep space missions. The film takes audiences on a behind-the-scenes tour of the international effort to send astronauts to Mars within the next 20 years, culminating in a virtual voyage to the Red Planet. Dazzling and meticulous computer imagery depicts the new machines that will soon enter into our lexicon – Orion, Olympus, SLS rockets – spacecraft, habitats, landers, and vehicles necessary to achieve interplanetary travel, touchdown and colonization.
Journey to Space taps into the same human fervor and fascination that makes science fiction so popular, our unquenchable drive to explore and discover what lies beyond. This film, though, is not fiction. Mars is the next step in what will be an unending human odyssey to explore the cosmos. Journey to Space is about the next chapter, a vision certain to inspire today’s young explorers and dreamers. It is time to take the next great leap into space. It is time for our species, in the words of Carl Sagan, to “set sail across the cosmic ocean.” Next stop… Mars!

Space Cinema: Gravity | 3D
In celebration of the final weeks of our current museum exhibition Journey to Space, the Empirical Theater offers a selection of films that explore humankind's relationship with the vastness of outer space. Written, produced and directed by acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, the 2013 release Gravity won seven Academy Awards for its intense portrayal of astronauts stranded in space after the mid-orbit destruction of their space shuttle.
Sandra Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.
Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times callled Gravity “one of the most stunning visual treats of the year and one of the most unforgettable thrill rides in recent memory."

On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the "Miracle on the Hudson" when Captain "Sully" Sullenberger glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career.
Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film stars Tom Hanks in the title role, Aaron Eckhart as Sully's co-pilot Jeff Skiles, and Oscar nominee Laura Linney as Sully's wife Lorrie Sullenberger.
"That it unnerves you as much as it does may seem surprising, given that going in, we know how this story ends. But Mr. Eastwood is also very good at his job, a talent that gives the movie its tension along with an autobiographical sheen." Manohla Dargis, New York Times
