Under My Thumb

At the January OMSI After Dark, more than 40 people gave us their thumbprints (and their bacteria) to help grow a bacterial lawn. A bacterial lawn describes the appearance of bacterial colonies when all the individual colonies on a petri-dish merge together to form a field or mat of bacteria. What we hope to see is a patchwork of the different types of bacteria and fungi.

Join us for National Engineering Week!

The Foundation’s signature program, Engineers Week, celebrates the positive contributions engineers make to society and is a catalyst for outreach across the country to kids and adults alike. Engineers Week is part of many corporate and government cultures and is celebrated on every U.S. engineering college campus. During this week, OMSI will be featuring an engineering themed demo per day in the Vernier Technology Lab:

Rock on at the Agate & Mineral Show this weekend!

This weekend marks the 61st year of the Agate & Mineral Show at OMSI. Presented by the Oregon Agate & Mineral Society (OAMS) visitors can enjoy a wide array of beautiful cabochons (cut, shaped, and polished rocks) including agate, jasper, and obsidian from the northwest. Special features include:

The Oregon State Seal made from a large variety of Oregon stones including the Sun Stone, the Oregon State gem.

Welcome to ISMO’s Corner, a place where staff in all areas of the museum will share everything from new science discoveries to volunteer profiles. ISMO is OMSI’s first and only mascot, and while he’s been out of the public eye for many years, we decided it was time for a comeback. Though he has a distinctly 1950s feel, he represents the spirit of community and discovery that has always made us who we are.
